First Time Visiting? Start Here!

Well good morning there!

Last night Jack chose a “sleep party” (where I sleep on the floor in his room) as a reward for good behavior.  I went to bed at 7:45 pm on a Friday and had some crazy dreams.  One of the dreams was that there was a gang on the street below us that initiated people by making them, um…excited the gang’s mascot which was a bulldog.

I didn’t have to do this, but I did have to make the shirts for the people who passed the test.  I kept having to silkscreen “I pleased the pooch and all I got was this lousy shirt” logos on to purple shirts (their gang colors).

Then I had a dream that I woke up and logged on to my blog.  And that one of my posts had exploded on Pintrest.  And that I had a lot of new Facebook and Google followers.  And that people had left such nice comments that I puffed up like the peacock that lives on my street and shits on my front porch.

Phew, what a crazy bunch of dreams, right?

If the dream about the the Pintrest explosion had been real, I’d say a huge thanks to whomever first pinned my Homemade Vicks Vapor shower disks.  And to anyone who has repinned it, thank you!  And to anyone who has just found my blog because of it, I’d say I hope you stick around, like what you see, and share it with others.  Because eventually I’d love to make blogging a full time job, and growing this site by word of mouth (word of Pintrest, Facebook, etc.) is how that gets done.

But if that doesn’t happen, I’ll be ok.  I always have my fallback business of making tshirts for newly inducted gangsters.

Yo yo, head’s up, this post might contain affiliate links which help to support my site. And my canning, seed buying, and aggressive saving habits.

Making this recipe or others?

Post a photo on my Facebook page, share it on Instagram, or save it to Pinterest with the tag #sustainablecooks. I can't wait to see your take on it!

  4. Hey – I think I might have been one of the first to repin the Vicks Disks! I read your posts religiously (often right after they arrive via email.) Literally within minutes after I pinned it, I had an email notification that it had been repinned a BOATLOAD of times! (You should also know how much I hoped it would be repinned so more people would subscribe to your blog. I adore your post updates & recipes, too! And Jack? Well – he’s stinkin’ adorable!) Here’s to full-time-blogger-success for you!!!

    • Well aren’t you a doll – thank you! I wish I knew your name so that I could thank you properly.

I raise of glass of water kefir soda to your kindness. And your intelligence for thinking my kid is cute. LOL

  5. I found your blog through a repin of the vicks disc thingies and I totally dig your blog and am your newest follower.

I, too, an working on full time bloggerhood, have a kiddo that I think is just a tad younger than yours and have also been named the hippie of my family for all the stuff we DIY to control ingredients. Anyway, you seem pretty rad…kind of like my long lost blog sister. Ok. Stopping now.

Anyway, Have a great weekend! I’ll be back for sure.

  6. I also got sucked in the Vick Vapour Disk vortex and ended up on your site. Like, an hour ago 🙂 You have a very cute blog. And you are one funny lady as well! It’s a keeper!

  9. I’m entertained! Your Vick’s pucks are going viral- and I bet your blog will too.

  10. The Vicks disks sucked me in. You are hilarious! I will be adding you to my daily read. Loved the water kefir soda post the best and will be trying it for sure!

  11. I did find your blog when a friend pinned the Vick’s disks and I’m glad. We’re in the process of buying a small farm and things (money wise) are gonna be tight for a while. Happy to be here.!

  12. Sarah,
I met Troy’s cousin Scott in college at Central Washington University; I also went to high school with Scott’s wife, Erica. Thus, I stumbled across your blog from Erica’s. I adore your writing, your ideas get me to think outside the box, and I appreciate that. I have had some health issues in the past couple of years, just discovered I am Gluten intolerant and most likely have Celiac (waiting on blood test results to confirm). I divulge this to substantiate that I am headed for some major lifestyle changes and feel this blog may really help. I wish you luck in all that you do, will spread the word, and thanks for your insight.

By the way, at the risk of sounding like a copy cat, Jack is truly adorable! I am a School Psychologist and love kids, you have a handsome man on your hands!! 🙂

    • Small world! Scotty is one of Jack’s godfathers!

Sorry to hear about the possible Celiac diagnosis. I would say that even if the tests don’t come back as showing you have it, if you feel better when you don’t eat wheat, trust your gut (pun intended) and go based on how you feel. Jack was tested for wheat and milk allergies when he was little and it didn’t show a thing. Yet, if I had even a little dairy, he would poop blood and “slime”.

There are lots of wonderful gluten-free blogs and recipes out there. I hope you find your path to health!

Thanks for the compliments on the kiddo!

  13. You are awesome Sarah! Keep up the good work lady!

    • Thanks lady! I think of you every time I look at my seeds. I have a new zuke seed called “patio star” which is designed for small gardens. Do you want me to send you some?

  14. I LOVE your blog, I found it through Pinterest 🙂 And the first thing I saw were the Vick’s Discs! <3

  15. Pinterest is a rediculous habit of mine, but that’s how I found you! You’re now on my google homepage…you are HI-larious! Can we be friends in real life? (Did I just cross-over to stalker mode?)

  16. Too funny! I did find you via the Vic’s thing on Pinterest (wish I’d seen it last week when I had a cold!) and I immediately added your blog to my reader! I’ll be sticking around, thanks for the content!

  17. Jujst thought you’d like to know your vicks pucks are the basis of a article on lifehacker. That’s how I got here:

Congrats! I know I’ve found a awesome blog when there is one useful idea after another and I just can’t stop reading – a pleasant surprise indeed!

    • Thank you, someone sent me that a few weeks ago. I was super flattered!

Glad to hear you’re enjoying things, and I hope you become a lifetime reader!

  18. It was the vapor pucks on Pinterest that brought me here too, but I can’t stop reading! Love the blog and have already passed it on to a friend who loves “that’s what she said” jokes as much as I do. Thanks for writing, for sharing, and for staying 12 🙂 We readers are enjoying it!

  19. I found your blog today, through (the vics thingy lol). I continued reading, starting with ‘no spend March’. I was laughing so hard, my husband turned from his pc and looked at me as if I had just cracked. I had to read it to him and even he smiled…which is rare due to the fact that his humor usually only manifests through things like crankyankers and family guy (which is not my cup of tea). Anyways, I think you are super funny and once I figure out how, cuz I rarely read blogs, I will ‘like’, subscribe….whatever your blog. 🙂
